Sripathi was born and raised in Puliyur village, close to Jawadhu hills in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, traveled more than 200 km to take her exam in Chennai in November 2023. She had spent months studying and was determined to do her best.
Despite the long journey and unfamiliar surroundings, Sripathi remained focused and confident. She knew that this exam was a stepping stone towards her dream of pursuing higher education and she was willing to go the extra mile to achieve it.
She is the first tribal woman to become a civil judge in the state, which HT could not independently verify. Mahalakshmi, who had a teacher who helped her through the process, posted on Facebook that her family and friends had been like “a parachute fitted to Sripathi’s wings” in helping her get to the city a day after her baby born.

Sripathi is a single-named tribal woman from Tamil Nadu's hills who became a civil judge and took her selection exam right after giving birth.
Her photo of herself holding her infant daughter in front of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission's office has gone viral throughout the state, honoring her tribal identity and the fact that she attained it just before becoming a mother.
