Duvall and Sampson got married in 1970, but their relationship fell apart as Duvall's acting career took off. They eventually divorced in 1974. Shelley recalled meeting Bernard at a benefit event in the late 1960s, where she was modeling a Rudi Gernreich bathing suit. They dated for several years before tying the knot in 1970, but sadly their marriage didn't last.

Bernard Sampson was an artist by profession

Shelley hosted a party where Bernard Sampson was displaying his artwork, and three crew members from a Robert Altman film noticed Duvall's unique appearance and excitement. They invited her to bring Sampson's work to what they claimed was an event for art patrons, but turned out to be a secret audition with Altman and producer Lou Adler present.

After divorcing Bernard, Shelley started a new relationship with Paul in 1976. Even though their romance didn't endure, both of them eventually found new love. In 1979, Paul got married to the late actress Carrie Fisher from 1983 to 1984.

Shelley Duvall and Dan Gilroy met while working on a movie together in 1989, and they began dating shortly after. Their relationship lasted until Duvall's passing, with their bond strengthening both on and off-screen during the filming of Mother Goose Rock 'n' Rhyme. Dan played Gordon Goose in the movie, while Shelley played Little Bo Peep, a role that brought them closer together romantically.

Shelley opened up about her mental health challenges while on Dr. Phil in 2016, shedding light on her struggles during her time on the show. After experiencing the devastation of their Los Angeles home being destroyed in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the Gilroy family made the decision to start anew in Texas for a fresh beginning.
