Simone Biles was raised by her grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, after being placed in foster care at a young age due to her mother Shanon Biles struggles with addiction. Ronald and Nellie have been unwavering in their support for Simone's gymnastics career attending all of her competitions except for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19.

Shanon Biles, Simone Biles Biological Mother

Biles is the third child of Shanon. When Biles was between six to nine months old, she was placed in foster care because Shanon was struggling with substance abuse issues. At that time, Shanon had been battling alcohol and drug addiction for several years and was unable to care for her children.

Shannon Biles had to make the difficult decision to give up her children, Simone and Adria, for adoption to Ronald and Nellie. She was not devastated that she couldn't care for them due to her struggles with addiction. Shannon wasn't allowed to see her children for six years, but she knew it was the best decision for them at the time.

Shanon is in touch with her birth mother who seems to be supportive of her, but Simone Biles feels that her bond with her adoptive parents is stronger. Unfortunately, Biles does not have a relationship with her biological father, Kelvin Clemons, who also struggled with drug addiction like Shanon's birth mother.

In a podcast interview from April 2024, Simone Biles discussed her family dynamics and expressed gratitude for them. She mentioned that she doesn't feel the need to explain her family structure to others, as it can be confusing for people. Biles shared that her biological mother is also her father's daughter, and she refers to him as Dad. She considers herself fortunate to have received her parents' choice despite the complexity.
